The Wide-Ranging Field of Project Management

January 17, 2013

The title “project manager” may seem obscure and abstract to those outside the field. What does a project manager do? What sorts of projects might project managers manage? The field of project management is complex and calls for a wider variety of skills than most careers in the corporate world. According to Chris Windfelder— a professional project manager must have expertise in organizing large groups of people, managing large volumes of data, securing resources for the project at hand, and delivering high-quality results by established deadlines. Due to the broad range of projects that require skilled management, many project managers specialize in particular industries or functions.

Chris Windfelder identifies the most important aspects of project management as leadership, planning, and focus on goals. These skills must be learned through extensive experience in a given area, because the ability to outline appropriate goals and to speculate about a project’s budget are exclusive to the specific field in which the project manager is employed. For example, Chris Windfelder’s extensive experience in distribution environments enables him to offer quick and thorough planning and timely implementation transformation campaigns for both large and small companies.
